I went to a training last night on Baby Signs-- sign language for babies and preschoolers.  I've always wanted to learn and use it, and the presenter was good, Sheryl White. Her father in law is Burton White. She started signing with children when her 14yo daughter was a baby, and became so passionate about it that she now travels to libraries, preschools and trainings to share what she has learned.

A few things I learned were that signing helps all children and promotes literacy because the child learns to pay attention to details which will help with reading later. They learn to express themselves, which cuts down on frustration and crying. It is also great because it encompasses all the learning styles- visual, auditory and kinetic- you say the word as you sign it.

A question came up about whether children would sign instead of learning to speak. Her experience, and research has shown, that it can only help a child, and that if an older child still relies on it, that there are probably issues that would be much worse if they did not possess this communication tool. It also activates a section of the brain which is otherwise unused. Finally research has shown that children only benefit from signing and do better later in school.

The best part, for me, was that you only need to learn a few words- i.e. if you are singing a song with the kids the whole song does not need to be in sign- and also, it is how children learn anyway, one or two words at a time, so to sign everything would also be overwhelming to a child who was learning it.

The children were really excited about it and I demonstrated as many as I could remember. She also shared some websites and I will post them in the side link to share with you.
